Celebrating 37 Years of the Simplyhealth Great North Run

2018 marks the 37th year of the largest half marathon in the world, the Great North Run. The annual 13.1 mile run that takes place between Newcastle upon Tyne and South Shields see’s over 57,000 runners, professional and amateurs alike, take to the starting line to raise money for a huge range of charities.

The Great North Run is an absolutely integral part of North East culture, with the spirit of generosity that is synonymous with the North inspiring and motivating a huge range of people to complete the race for their chosen cause.

Inspired by former Olympic athlete Brendan Foster, the Great North Run was born from his desire to create a fun run experience similar to the New Zealand ‘Round the Bays’ race, closer to his hometown of Hebburn.

In 1977, he organised the ‘Gateshead Fun Run’ which then went on to become the Great North Run in 1981 and eventually the biggest half marathon in the world.

Beginning just outside of Newcastle city centre, the race see’s runners pass by some of the North East’s biggest landmarks, heading over the Tyne Bridge and through famous North Eastern towns before reaching the South Shields coast.

Typically taking place in September, the Great North Run is one of the North East’s biggest events, bringing sponsorship and support from a massive range of locals across the region, as well as professional athletes and some celebrities too.

Uniting the region, the Simplyhealth Great North Run is a rich part of our culture that we are proud to host. The giving nature of the event that supports so many great causes truly represents the character of the North.
